Mark Garnier MP today welcomed the announcement that the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee will hold an inquiry into nuisance telephone calls and text messages.
The Inquiry is going to focus on the enforcement of the current regulatory system shared between Ofcom and the Information Commissioner's Office. It will also look into the effectiveness of the existing Telephone Preference Service, which enables people to remove their personal details from certain marketing lists.
Mark Garnier commented: "I welcome the announcement from the Culture, Media and Sport Committee. This is a long overdue inquiry which will hopefully help to fix one of the big problems in our constituency. I receive plenty of letters about nuisance calls and text messages from my constituents, and I therefore recognise the scale of this problem.
"The problem is twofold: various call centres do not hold on to the existing regulations, and secondly, customers are often unable to file a complaint due to the caller's number being withheld. Silent, abandoned, and unsolicited marketing calls can be a real nuisance to everyone across our constituency and it is crucial that we get the regulations right.
"I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone across Wyre Forest experiencing problems with nuisance calls to respond to the Committee's inquiry. You can do so by submitting a short Word document by email to cmsev@parliament.uk with "Nuisance calls" in the subject of the email."
