With four energy companies having recently announced price rises between 6 - 9%, Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier is endorsing Big Energy Saving Week - an opportunity for families across the UK to learn how to make their home more energy efficient.
The campaign recommends households take several steps to ensure they are paying the lowest price available for their energy usage:
First, families should check with their energy supplier to ensure they are on the best tariff and payment method for their circumstances, and if they are entitled to any discounts. They should also contact their local Citizens Advice Bureau to check they are not missing out on any benefits or tax credits that could boost their household income. See www.citizensadvice.org.uk for local CAB contact details.
Next, families should visit an accredited switching website to see if they could get their energy cheaper elsewhere. Households might be able to save up to £200 per year. See www.bigenergysavingweek.org.uk for a list of accredited switching websites.
Finally, families may wish to consider making energy efficiency improvements to their home. By insulating cavity walls and the loft, households could save up to £160 per year. Not only could such efficiency measures reduce heating bills, they can make homes warmer, too. The six largest UK energy suppliers are giving away free or discounted insulation - call 0300 123 1234 for contact details to see if your family is eligible.
There are also significant funds available through the Warm Home Discount for those most in need; £1.1 billion of support is available to over 2 million low income households each year. There is also £48 million available from the Warm Front scheme, but only until January. See www.gov.uk for further details.
In Wyre Forest, locals can receive face to face advice on how to save money on their energy bills at the following times:
- Wyre Forest CAB, Kidderminster Market (Thursday 25 October, 10.00-16.00)
- Age UK - Wyre Forest Tulip Centre, Castle Road (Friday 26 October, 10.30-12.00)
Mark said, "With the rising costs of energy in homes throughout the country, improving efficiency is an essential measure to reduce bills and improve everyday life. I urge my constituents to take advantage of Big Energy Saving Week to start saving money today."
