Mark Garnier, MP for Wyre Forest, welcomes the announcement by the Home Secretary that cash payments for scrap metal will be made illegal. In a written statement to MPs, Theresa May announced that the Government would lay an amendment to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill to do so.
Mark, who has been lobbying the government for months now about this issue, said:
“I am delighted that the Government has decided to take legislative action to tackle the problem of metal theft. The APPG has said from the start that outlawing cash payments will be one of the most effective methods of preventing thieves from selling on stolen metal. This is only the first of what I hope will be a number of amendments to deal with all stages of the trading of stolen scrap metal.”
