Mark Garnier, MP for Wyre Forest, made a speech in the House of Commons on Friday (23rd March) in which he drew attention to some of the good things that are going on in Kidderminster. These included planning applications for local development, significant investment in local businesses and the Wyre Forest Jobs Fair.
Speaking in a debate following this week's Budget, Mark stressed the importance of highlighting positive local news. He cited the recent planning application for the former Sugar Beet Site as an example. If it goes through, the plans would include massive retail development alongside restaurants, hotels and up to 250 new homes.
Other positives that Wyre Forest's MP mentioned were the proposed expansion of the West Midlands Safari Park, £36 million investment in Brinton's Carpets by Carlyle Group and the fact that local unemployment, which doubled after 2005, has remained stable since 2010.
Mark also urged the Government to the Government to consider Birmingham Airport as a UK hub airport with the building of HS2. This would give the West Midlands economy a massive boost.
Speaking after the debate Mark said:
"It is incredibly important to draw attention to the good things that go on locally and the potential that Wyre Forest and the West Midlands hold. I am obviously thrilled that there are so many things that I was able to talk about in my speech.
"I am especially pleased about measures in the Budget designed to show that Britain is open for business, in particular, the cut in corporation tax. With corporate taxes as low as they were in the 1930s it means the UK is one of the best places to start and grow a business.
"I will continue to work with local businesses; the district and county councils and our LEP to ensure that there will even more good things to report about Wyre Forest. I am also looking forward to seeing as many people as possible at the Wyre Forest Jobs Fair this Friday in Kidderminster Town Hall."
