Pope Benedict XVI today announced his decision to resign, having served as the head of the Catholic Church for nearly eight years.
Mark Garnier said: 'I recognise that the Pope's resignation is an important announcement to many people in Wyre Forest and many went to hear him in Cofton Park, Birmingham in 2010.
'He has made a very difficult and brave decision today, as the last Pope to step down was Gregory XII, nearly six centuries ago. Benedict XVI is going to be remembered with great respect, both for his work for the Catholic Church and for his diplomatic endeavours.'
Period of Sede Vacante will commence on February 28th, until the new Pope is elected by the papal conclave.
