Today's newly released unemployment data shows a small reduction of just 3,000 fewer unemployed to 2.46 million, and the regional figures for the West Midlands show a reduction of 16,000 to 252,000 for the three months to December 2009. But beneath these figures lie some alarming trends.
Long term unemployed - those out of work for more than a year - rose by 37,000 to 663,000; whilst those seeking jobseekers allowance climbed by 23,500 to 1.64 million in January.
Also showing an alarming trend is the rise in people 'underemployed' - people who have taken part time jobs instead of full time jobs and who are still suffering financially. This has partly offset the 37,000 decline in the number of people in full time employment.
Figures published on the Worcestershire County Council website show that Wyre Forest is suffering the worse in the county. Local unemployment claimants number 2,572 in January - the highest number for all the 6 districts across the county. This is 780 higher than a year ago. Kidderminster, with 1,703 claimants, has a massive 6.0% unemployed. Stourport is 3rd in the urban rankings across the county with 4.9% unemployed. Wyre Forest's employment rate is the lowest in the county at 71.4%.
Mark Garnier says of the figures: "The situation in Wyre Forest is dire. Yet our local MP - Dr Richard Taylor - is steadfastly focusing his attention on health issues.
"The biggest challenges facing our district now are the local economy, and unemployment. Businesses need help to stay competitive and viable; our local jobseekers need opportunities brought to our district; and our towns need help to move forward.
"In 2001, when they were downscaling the hospital, the man of the moment was always going to be a doctor. But in 2010, when our district is suffering badly as a result of one of the worse recessions for a century, the man of the moment has to be someone who has extensive experience of business, economics and investment. I look forward to the opportunity of facing the challenge that our district confronts right now."
